South African track and field legend Wayde van Niekerk is a man who knows his training shoes. We can only imagine how many brands and varieties he’s tried over the course of his career, so when he expresses an appreciation for a particular one, we sit up and take notice.
Recently, the 400m world record holder took to Twitter to tell the world he is “obsessed with the Adidas NMD.” Here’s a closer look at the shoe that Wayde is so excited about.
We don’t need to say much about Adidas – it’s one of the best-established sports brands in the world, and has brought an impressive number of shoes to the market over its 95-year history. It introduced the NMD line in 2016, as a lifestyle sneaker with an emphasis on comfort. The line was designed by Nic Galway, one of the footwear giant’s leading designers.
Although running is what Wayde is known for, he won’t be wearing NMDs during his races. This is not a running shoe but rather a fashion line, designed to bring a classy, sporty edge to casual dressing.
The soles of the NMD (which stands for ‘nomad’) are fitted with Adidas’s patented Boost cushioning for comfort and a soft easy step. The uppers are of Primeknit and are available as both lace-up and slip-on. The line now boasts a wide range of colour and style variations, while maintaining their distinctive silhouette, which the Adidas design team reportedly worked very hard on to make it distinct from any of their previous lines.
